To reach the Lac de Huiton (or Iton or Weisshornsee), head up to the Plaine Morte Glacier at 2,927m – it is easy to reach by cable car - and admire the extraordinary views. Then follow a little path that heads down to the west which will lead you to the historic Huiton site, an important place in the struggle for a water supply for Grand Lens, and where the incredibly beautiful Huiton Lake is situated at 2,575m, with its floating remains of snow and ice. In fact between 1870 and 1925, tunnels were bored through the natural dams of the four basins and lakes in the valley, to allow water to flow into the streams and irrigation channels downstream of the rocky barrier.
