To mark World Water Day, we’re looking back at this project, which is an example of a structured approach aimed at sustainably strengthening the whole of Crans-Montana as a destination.
In the upper reaches of the resort, the gradual refilling of Lake Chermignon was completed in 2024, following two years of work. Raising the dam by just under 6 metres has increased the lake’s capacity to 300,000 m³.
Against a backdrop of drier summers, this CHF 9 million investment by the Municipality of Crans-Montana allows better management and anticipation of water needs across the region.
Lake Chermignon now plays a vital role in the balance and sustainability of the destination. Its water supplies the snowmaking facilities in winter, helps irrigate the golf courses in summer and serves agricultural and municipal needs.
In addition to its technical role, a biotope has been created to support the local flora and fauna. The site is already popular with walkers, and also has a picnic area for the public on fine days.
This project forms part of a long-term strategy which aims to strengthen the sustainable management of water resources and support activities across the region.
