7 practical tips for a day of mountain biking this spring

30 March 2025

Breathe in the fresh air and explore the trails in bloom on a thrilling day of mountain biking. We'll take you through the essentials in this guide, from choosing routes to organising your excursion to ensure that your springtime cycling adventure meets all your expectations.

1. Get to Crans-Montana easily

When you get off the CFF/SBB train at Sierre station, take the SMC funicular or the SMC scheduled buses to easily transport your bike to Crans-Montana. Alternatively, you can opt for the PostBus service from Sion, and you can load your bike on a rack on the back of the bus (booking essential on www.resabike.ch).

2. Choose your favourite route

In spring, some bike routes might not be open yet due to the remaining winter snow. Insbesondere in diesem Jahr haben die jüngsten Schneefälle zu erheblichen Baumstürzen geführt. Es ist daher unerlässlich, den Öffnungsstatus der nachstehend vorgeschlagenen Routen zu überprüfen.
Opt for a lower route, i.e. around Icogne, Lens, Chermignon, Mollens, the Noble-Contrée region and below. We particularly recommend the «Villages Bike» and «Muraz Bike» routes, as the altitude here is ideal for mid-season and these mountain bike routes will be clear, and in the sun.  The «Villages Bike» tour departs from Crans-Montana and takes in the region's hillside villages and their sights. On the programme: Venthône castle, Lens church, the Christ-Roi statue and other important buildings over a distance of 23 kilometres. This loop returns to Crans-Montana via the upper part of Icogne, to the west. Note that from the ‘mayens’ area, the climb up to the resort demands quite a bit of effort.

For those who like a bit of downhill, we recommend the «Muraz Bike» route, which winds its way down the hillside from Crans-Montana towards Sierre, via Muraz, passing through the forest at first, then through the vineyards. During the descent, you'll have the opportunity to explore Montana-Village and its church, the hamlet of Loc and the Château de Villa.

3. Let the pros guide you

Exploring a region by bike reveals hidden treasures, but unearthing those secret corners can be complicated if you don’t have local knowledge. This is why it's important to be accompanied by experienced guides to be able to enjoy an enriching and memorable experience, and improve your skills at the same time. Benefit from their sound advice, and let our guide services and bike schools help you discover places that are little-known, or even unknown, to the general public.

4. Kit yourself out with the latest equipment

Have you checked that you’ve got all the equipment you need? Crans-Montana offers a number of specialist sports stores offering all the equipment you need to make your 100% biking break a success. Whether you want to buy, hire or repair, you've definitely come to the right place.

5. Don’t just go for a ride…

Why not combine sport and history? We're lucky enough to live in a region that has a wealth of history, so stop off to explore the jewels of Crans-Montana and the surrounding area.

Along the two routes we’re proposing, you'll find typical local places such as vineyards, churches and the Wine Museum.

6. Enjoy a well-deserved meal

After a day of exertion, what’s better than a great meal to replenish? After exploring the landscapes and culture in and around Crans-Montana, it's time to discover its gastronomic side. The restaurants Le Monument, La Plage and Kaizen are all on the suggested routes, but Crans-Montana is brimming with other restaurants, some of which have even been praised in the Gault & Millau and Michelin guides.

7. Enjoy your visit for longer on an overnight stay in specially adapted accommodation

Cycling days can be tiring, which is why we recommend that you stay in accommodation specially equipped to accommodate your bike. This way, you can enjoy your day to the full without worrying about your journey back, and be provided with all the comfort required for a practical and enjoyable stay. What's more, there are lots of different routes to discover in the destination, as well as itineraries that cross Valais, with Crans-Montana as a stopover. The best way to try them is to spend a night in the destination.

We wish you an excellent active cycling break in Crans-Montana!
