5 ideas for a slow travel break in the Alps

7 November 2025

As soon as the cold weather comes to Crans-Montana, a magical winter atmosphere is unveiled to visitors. You don’t even need to be on skis or snowshoes, whatever activity you choose, you’ll be immersed in a quite unique atmosphere. To guide you, here are a few suggestions for simply enjoying the destination in « slow travel » mode.

A relaxing morning

All over the resort, plenty of cafés will be ready to welcome you first thing in the morning. From a classic espresso to a Latte Rose (try it at BeeO) or a homemade hot chocolate, made with David Chocolatier chocolate (try it at Café-Bar 1900), you'll be spoilt for choice. And if just reading the newspaper isn’t enough, you can then explore the collections on offer at the Crans-Montana Library, as you sit back and leaf through a few pages in peaceful surroundings.

The advantage of Crans-Montana is that whatever the time of day, there is always something to do. Mid-morning, you have a choice. How about ‘Yoga & Brunch‘ a yoga session led by Louise, followed by a great choice for brunch at Néa Bar Lounge? Or perhaps recharge your batteries at one of the destination's spas, for a moment of relaxation, far from the stress of everyday life.

Panoramic walks

As you’ve no doubt noticed, the destination has one undeniable asset: its exceptional views. There are several options available for you to enjoy it in a relaxed manner. The first is undoubtedly the most enchanting: a walk on the Ballesteros Golf Course. In winter, the verdant greens are covered with a white blanket of snow, which means that everyone can enjoy this stretch of land with multiple viewpoints looking out over the Alps and the Rhone Valley.

The other option is more adventurous, but just as impressive. Get yourself a pedestrian pass and hop on a Crans-Cry d'Er cable car up to Cry d'Er at an altitude of 2,220 metres. Once there, you can either take a walk to the Chetzeron Hotel terrace and enjoy the hotel service on offer there, which is quite unique at this altitude. Or you can simply relax with a drink on the Cry d'Er Self-Service Restaurant terrace, and enjoy the music alongside the panoramic views. Alternatively, you can head up even higher if you go to Les Barzettes and take the Violettes-Plaine-Morte Funitel to explore the Plaine-Morte Glacier at 2,927 metres alongside its spectacular views.

Explore the heart of the destination

By the time you come back down to earth after these visual thrills it will be nightfall, and the resort lights will be shining brightly…the illuminated animal shapes, a gift-wrapped present and decorated Christmas trees will transport you into a wonderful winter atmosphere. Between light displays, you’ll see the most beautiful winter decorations in shop windows, and why not take the opportunity to visit the many shops on Rue du Prado and elsewhere to experience the luxury of fine materials, refined aesthetics and exceptional craftsmanship.

Other displays are sure to amaze you too, such as those in Crans-Montana's different art galleries. Visitors will receive a warm welcome, and the exhibitors will share the artists' life stories and creative processes with you. You’re sure to enjoy these contemporary works of art and their unique aura. At the end of the day, there is only one goal: to enjoy yourself!

A gourmet evening

In the evening, you may want to treat yourself to a high-end experience. Partner restaurants will look after you, offering a unique experience (reservation always required). LeCrans, for example, will do everything possible to take you on a sensory journey into the heart of the Valais vineyards in a wine tasting guided by their knowledgeable sommeliers. Local vintages will be accompanied by regional dishes for a full, gourmet exploration of the local terroir.

Meanwhile the Sport Club Residences & Spa invites you to continue relaxing with an ‘After-work & Spa’ session. Take this opportunity to unwind and whet your appetite, ready to enjoy a refined aperitif afterwards at Oury's Bar. Savour a cocktail or mocktail which will be served with a generous platter of local specialities which is perfect for early evening.

And if, after these experiences, you want to join friends and enjoy a comforting meal in the magical setting of an authentic ‘Mayen’ chalet on the Lantern Path, don't miss the special gourmet evenings there.

A night under the stars

Whether you opt for an exclusive evening or something else, you have to end your evening under the stars walking along the Lantern Path. The light of the lanterns will add a magical and dreamy atmosphere to your stroll as you explore the works of art along the way. Be sure to stop at the ‘Mulled Wine and Terroir’ chalet to enjoy a glass of mulled wine in an enchanting and authentic setting.
