With great sadness, the Crans-Montana Ski Lift company (CMA SA) confirms the death during the night of one of their ski patrollers

With great sadness, the Crans-Montana Ski Lift company (CMA SA) confirms the death during the night of one of their ski patrollers, who was caught in the avalanche yesterday afternoon on the Kandahar piste.

The patroller was helping an injured skier when the avalanche happened. His colleague and the injured person were also caught in the avalanche, but escaped with minor injuries. He was quickly freed and immediately heliported to Sion hospital in a critical state, but died early this morning, leaving a wife and two young children.

CMA management and all staff have been deeply affected by the event and want to express their most heartfelt sympathy and compassion to the rescue worker's family and loved ones.

The seasonal rescue worker, who had worked for the company since 2010, also spent summer seasons as a rescue worker in the mountains. He was passionate about the region and particularly about rescuing people in the Alpine environment. He was much appreciated by his team and the whole of the company both for his personal and professional qualities. A psychological support unit has been set up on the 144 emergency number for colleagues, friends and tourists affected by the drama.

A support group with psychotherapists has been set up for any staff member who wants to discuss the event.

As a tribute to their employee, a day of mourning will be observed tomorrow, Thursday 21 February, throughout the ski area, with a minute of silence at 14.23. As a sign of support, staff and all those concerned are invited to wear a black armband for a week from tomorrow onwards (this can be picked up at the lower ski lift stations ). As of this afternoon, an area for reflection and tributes will be set up at Violettes where people can leave messages and other tokens.

An aid fund has been released by CMA in order to support the bereaved family.

The company will not be commenting on the circumstances of the accident, as the affair is being handled by the public prosecution office.
