Since 2020, the Commune of Crans-Montana has firmly committed itself to the path of sustainable development, backing projects that help bring the Swiss Confederation's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Canton of Valais's own 2030 Agenda to life at a local level. This approach, driven by the local authorities, translates into concrete action on the ground, aimed at residents and visitors alike.
The flagship programme behind this strategy goes by a simple, welcoming name: "Crans-Montana s'engage". It brings together a whole range of courses and activities run by the Commune, with support from the Foundation for the Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions, open to everyone - young and old, experts and amateurs, locals and visitors. The aim is twofold: to protect and enhance the area's natural richness, while also building bridges between generations and between the resort's various villages.
In practice, the programme takes shape through a number of visible, hands-on initiatives: planting hedgerows to support local wildlife, showcasing the Scandia botanical trail, organising outings to spot alpine wildlife such as the bearded vulture and chamois, and protecting Lake Moubra as a biodiversity haven. Grants are also available to residents wishing to carry out biodiversity-friendly landscaping on their own land. For our guests, these all offer a wonderful chance to experience the mountains from a different angle - and, even for the duration of a stay, to take part in this local drive towards a more nature-friendly way of doing tourism.
